GOING SOLAR

How does solar work?

At Solaire Energy, we install photovoltaic (PV) solar panels that allow you to harness the power of the sun to generate clean, renewable electricity for your home or business.

Here’s how it works: when sunlight hits the photovoltaic panels, they collect photons and produce a voltage. This solar electricity is typically connected to your utility grid, which can earn you credits on your electric bill. For those seeking more independence, solar power can also be stored in batteries for emergency backup or off-grid use.

PRODUCTION

How Much Energy Can Solar Panels Generate?

In Pennsylvania, a 1 KW photovoltaic system generates around 4-5 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per day. Our average system size is 7-10 KW, producing 30 – 50 kWH per day.

To put that into perspective, most homes use about 20-30 kWh per day just for appliances (excluding electric heating or air conditioning). While a large PV system would be required to power an entire home, many of our customers opt for smaller, grid-tied systems and combine them with energy-saving measures to reduce overall electricity use.

SYSTEM INFO

How Does a Photovoltaic (PV) System Work?

A PV system is made up of panels wired together and mounted on a south-facing roof or on the ground with minimal shading. These panels produce DC current, which is sent to an inverter. The inverter converts the DC current to AC current—the type your home runs on—and feeds it into your electrical panel.

If you’re connected to the utility grid, your system can be as large as needed. The more energy it produces, the larger the credit on your electric bill. For those wanting to go fully off-grid, your PV system must be carefully sized to match your electric needs. In this case, a bank of deep-cycle batteries stores energy for use when the sun isn’t shining.

Smaller stand-alone PV systems can power specific applications, such as outdoor lighting or water pumps, and provide backup power for critical systems like furnace ignition or emergency lighting in case of an outage.

Environmental Impact of Solar Energy

Solar energy is a clean, renewable power source that doesn’t produce air pollution, water pollution, or greenhouse gases. Every kilowatt of solar power you generate reduces the need for traditional energy sources that have a much larger environmental footprint. By choosing solar, you’re making a positive impact on the planet—reducing your carbon footprint while enjoying the benefits of sustainable energy.

Cost and Savings of Solar Power Systems

The cost of installing a solar power system varies depending on the size, location, and desired energy output. Most residential installations typically range from $20,000 to $40,000, with larger systems requiring a bigger upfront investment.

The payback period for solar panels is usually between 10-15 years. Over time, solar panels pay for themselves by lowering your energy bills, providing long-term savings and energy independence. The life expectancy of the solar panels is 20 to 30 years.
