ABOUT HEATING & COOLING
How to choose your system?
There are many options for choosing a heating and cooling system for your home, depending the floor layout, fuel sources available and your preferences.
There are basically two types of heat distribution: ducted forced air and hot water baseboard, radiators or floor loops. A third option is point-of-use systems such as mini-split heat pumps, stand-alone floor heaters and wall heaters.

Weighing your options
The Benefits of Forced Air Systems
Enhanced Air Quality and Comfort
A well-maintained forced air system not only keeps your home comfortable but also improves indoor air quality. The system’s filters capture allergens, dust, and airborne particles that would otherwise circulate through your home via the ductwork. For added comfort, you can integrate a dehumidifier or humidifier into the system, maintaining an ideal humidity level without increasing energy usage.
Energy Efficiency You Can Count On
Forced air heating systems are designed for high efficiency, with most systems operating between 85-98% efficiency. This means you’ll enjoy a warm, cozy home without wasting valuable energy—saving you money on your heating bills while reducing your environmental impact.
Combined Heating and Cooling for Year-Round Comfort
One of the key advantages of a forced air system is its versatility. It’s the only HVAC solution that seamlessly combines heating and cooling. The same ductwork used for heating can also distribute central air conditioning, providing an efficient, all-in-one solution for keeping your home comfortable in every season.
The Benefits of Point-of-Use Systems
In homes without ductwork it’s hard to install well-designed ductwork after-the-fact. For example, homes with electric baseboard or hot water baseboard. Ductless mini-split heat pumps are a great solution in this case. Each open area and bedroom can have their own unit for both heating and air-conditioning. Other point of use systems are floor furnaces and wall heaters, whether fuel-fired or electric.
Point-of-use systems provide targeted comfort cost-effectively where most needed.
The Benefits of Hot Water Systems
Hot water heat can be provided by boilers with baseboard radiators, or geothermal with radiant floor loops. People love hot water heat for the even, consistent comfort it provides. It is also healthy and clean, without the dust and airborne particulates typical of forced air systems.
Point-of-use systems provide targeted comfort cost-effectively where most needed.

Types of Heating Systems
At Solaire Energy, we offer a variety of forced air heating systems to meet the unique needs of your home or business. Here’s a closer look at the different types available:
- Natural Gas - Propane - Oil - Coal
These systems generate heat by burning fuel, creating warmth that is circulated throughout your space, with a furnace air handler or boiler hot water pumps.
- Heat is produced through the combustion of natural gas, propane, oil, or coal.
- A heat exchanger transfers the heat to the airstream or water supply.
- The burner, located within the heat exchanger, may be a ribbon style (long with holes), inshot (torch-like), or oil type.
- Ignition is provided by an electric spark, standing pilot, or hot surface ignitor.
- Safety mechanisms are in place to prevent combustion gases or unburned fuel from accumulating in the event of an ignition or venting failure.
- Electric Heat Pumps: Air-To-Air, Mini-Splits & Geothermal
A heat pump extracts heat from the air or ground, offering energy-efficient heating for your space.
- It harnesses heat from the outdoors, using either “ground source” or “air source” technology via the refrigeration cycle.
- All heat pumps are electric systems, but highly energy efficient. They are more efficient than electric resistance heating, and often more efficient than fossil fuel systems (natural gas, propane, oil).
- Air source heat pumps may require a backup heating system in colder climates, though newer models can handle temperatures as low as -15°F.
- Instead of a burner or heat exchanger, a refrigerant coil in the air handler provides warmth and can also be used for cooling in summertime.
Environmental Impact
Consider the environmental impact of what you burn for heat. Gas is the cleanest burning fuel, whether propane or natural gas. In fact, it is far less harmful to the environment than oil, wood or electricity generated from fossil fuels.
Gas produces about 30 percent less carbon dioxide than oil and about half that of coal or wood. When properly burned, gas produces heat, carbon dioxide and water vapor. It produces almost no sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, dissolved solids, or particulate matter.
Maintenance
Most manufacturers recommend an annual cleaning and tuning of your heating system, to make sure it is running at peak performance, and to clean and replace small parts that may go bad due to rust, corrosion or blockages. If your system includes air conditioning, a second maintenance is recommended at the beginning of the summer.
Cleaning and tuning isn’t just about safety; it’s also about preventative maintenance. Catching a problem before your furnace quits in the middle of the night on a cold evening will prevent costly emergency service rates, and keep your family warm and safe.
