About Combustion Safety Testing

Why Test?

Combustion equipment is anything that burns fossil fuel to create heat for warming your home, making hot water, cooking and drying clothes.

We test each unit to make sure it is drafting properly and that the flue gasses are at a safe level of carbon monoxide. When we air seal a home, it is very important to confirm that harmful carbon monoxide is not being trapped in your home. We follow the Building Performance Institute’s protocol for this testing.

Safety: We evaluate the safe operation of fuel-burning appliances (e.g., furnaces, water heaters, boilers, gas fireplaces).
Proper Drafting: We ensure that combustion gases are safely vented outside ensuring that there is no back drafting.
Identify Hazards: The byproduct of burning a fossil fuel is carbon monoxide. We check for the maximum allowable limit for each type of appliance in your home.

Combustion Testing

How Does It Work?

Most furnaces, boilers and hot water heaters need the air from inside of your home to burn fuel. We depressurize your home by turning on all devices that exhaust air from your home, (dryer, bath fans, attic fan etc.) to make sure that your equipment’s combustion gasses are still going safely up the chimney. We then use a combustion analyzer to determine if the level of carbon monoxide is safe. Equally important is the testing of gas cooking equipment that is directly venting the products of combustion directly into your living space.
