DUCT BLASTER TESTING
Why Test?
Our Duct Blaster Testing service is designed to measure and pinpoint any air leaks in your duct system, helping you improve HVAC efficiency, lower energy costs, and boost indoor comfort.
Duct Blaster Testing is required for new homes that have ductwork outside of the thermal envelope, such as an attic or crawlspace.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Duct Blaster Testing evaluates the airtightness of your ductwork by using a calibrated fan to pressurize the system. This test allows us to detect even the smallest leaks in your ducts, which could be causing your heating and cooling systems to work harder than necessary—wasting energy and money in the process. With precise measurements and targeted solutions, Duct Blaster Testing ensures your ducts are sealed and performing optimally.

- Energy Savings: Leaky ducts can account for significant energy loss, making your HVAC system less efficient and driving up utility bills. By identifying and sealing leaks, you can reduce energy waste and save on heating and cooling costs.
- Improved Comfort: Properly sealed ducts mean consistent temperatures throughout your home or business, eliminating hot or cold spots and improving overall comfort.
- Enhanced Air Quality: Leaky ducts can allow dust, allergens, and pollutants to enter your living space. Sealing your ducts helps improve indoor air quality and reduces the circulation of contaminants.
- Increased HVAC Longevity: By reducing the strain on your heating and cooling systems, sealed ducts help extend the life of your HVAC equipment, preventing unnecessary wear and tear.
Duct Blaster Testing for
New Construction
If your new home has ductwork running through unconditioned spaces—like an attic, uninsulated basement, or crawlspace—it’s essential to test the ductwork for air tightness. This test is required by Pennsylvania residential building code and ensures your home is as energy-efficient as possible. To perform the test, we use a duct blaster, a small but powerful fan attached to the air handler or a central return grill. The fan pressurizes the ductwork, and we measure air leakage using pressure gauges to identify any weak spots.
The 2018 building code in Pennsylvania sets a high standard for ductwork tightness, requiring that it meet 4 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of leakage per 100 square feet of conditioned space with the fan running at standard pressure. This test is required only if any portion of the duct work runs through unconditioned areas such as attics and garages. Achieving this level of airtightness requires both a well-sealed air handler and well-sealed ductwork.
For homes that are permitted under the 2021 building code, there are some changes – all air handling duct work must be tested anywhere in the house. If any portion of the ductwork Is outside of the thermal barrier, as in an attic, the requirements are still 4 CFM of leakage per 100 square feet. If all of the ductwork is within the thermal envelope, as in a heated basement, then the requirement is 8 CFM per 100 square feet.
