ABOUT HRV & EVR

What is Heating and Energy Ventilation Recovery?

HRV and ERV systems are designed to exchange stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air while maintaining your home’s energy efficiency. These systems recover heat (or cooling energy, depending on the season) from the outgoing air and transfer it to the incoming air, minimizing energy loss. This means you get all the benefits of fresh air ventilation without sacrificing comfort or driving up your energy bills.

Mini-splits

How They Work

A ductless mini-split system consists of two key components: the indoor air handling unit and the outdoor compressor/condenser. The indoor unit, typically mounted high on a wall or suspended from the ceiling, delivers conditioned air directly into your living space. Instead of relying on complex ductwork, the indoor unit is connected to the outdoor condenser via a simple refrigerant line, ensuring efficient heating and cooling.

In most cases, multiple indoor units are connected to a single outdoor condenser, allowing for independent control of each indoor unit. Despite their individual settings, all indoor units utilize the same outdoor heat pump to either absorb or disperse heat.

A mini-split system operates similarly to a traditional A/C unit, which removes heat from inside your home and transfers it outdoors via the condenser. However, the heat pump in a mini-split system reverses this process in colder months, absorbing heat from the outside air—even when temperatures drop as low as -4°F—and transferring it indoors to keep your space warm.

While mini-split systems are designed to operate efficiently in freezing conditions, the colder it gets outside, the harder the heat pump has to work. For regions that regularly experience freezing temperatures, you might consider pairing your mini-split system with a backup heating solution for optimal comfort and performance during extreme cold spells.

The Financials

Cost & Savings

Ductless mini-splits have higher upfront costs than some systems, however, lower operation costs. Installation is easy and normally takes only a day or two. There are various tax credits, rebates and other incentives for heat pump upgrades.
